Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
