Our Premier Release of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Position.

At first glance, Lux may look more like a difficult university quiz than the latest pop record by an artist whose last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Divided into 4 distinct parts and sung in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, often via the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is launched skyward on this record, supported by the constant presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the efforts of other artists look quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in escape overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, and full credit belonging to the artist. Although this is not her first project to blend the past with the present, the ambitions are much greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates this fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic Björk during her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. When she is breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

That playful spirit comes forth clearly on the stirring Italian ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four moments. Then, all the music falls away, and we hear a spontaneous laugh and a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds down like comedic force. The song then shifts to the wild track featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm with this album is that you never quite understand—or even wish to know—what you is going to next."

Nearly each track finishes in a completely distinct point from how it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins off dark and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement of the album involves navigating the line between radical experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is no coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track sung primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spirals upward. That trick gets repeated by a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes time to fully mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While some big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, Lux offers a lavish banquet where the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flit from discussions about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
