Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.
"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
